The Emfuleni
Municipality moved to launch its Revenue Enhancement
Campaign in Bophelong on 09 April 2008. The campaign
aimed at encouraging ratepayers to pay their municipal
accounts at a public meeting that was addressed by the
Executive Mayor, Councillor Dikeledi Tsotetsi and the
MMC for finance, Councillor Nkapu Ranake.
The Executive Mayor said that the campaign was an effort
to meet communities half way. “Those who come
forward and make arrangements to pay their account will
be assisted” she said. She further mentioned that
the incentive package consist of 50% write off for cash
payment of all outstanding debt, entering into an arrangement

The municipality will also
be acting against those who default on their municipal
accounts. One of the mechanisms that will be implemented
will be that of garnishing defaulters. Those who can
afford to pay and fail to do so will be negatively affected
if they do not make the necessary arrangements. The
Municipal debt currently stands at R2, 3 billion.
In his presentation, the Chief Financial Officer indicated
that between August and September 2006 the mass reapplication
for the indigent was successfully carried. He said the
Municipality received 39 000 applications of which 27
000 have been verified and accepted. The outstanding
figure of 12 000 will still need to be verified. |
