Library Week Launch - 7 March 2008
The Emfuleni Local Municipality celebrated South African
Library Week
7 – 22 March 2008, by making people of Emfuleni aware
of the many services available at a Community Library near
them.
In keeping with this year’s theme, Libraries aim to
encourage all citizens to use the Community Libraries and
to help everybody to connect to the wealth of information
that is provided by Libraries. The launch took place at Sharpeville
Library on 7 March 2008.
The programme was full of surprises by especially children
and the youth contributing to the theme of Library Week, either
through poetry, dance or singing. The Keynote speaker was
Mrs. K. Meyer, Gauteng Province, Director Libraries and Archive
Services. Cllr. Zwane delivered a speech on behalf of the
Mayor. We were also honoured to have two International guests
from Denmark who attended and could not express their views
on this event in words. The program was a highlight on the
Libraries calendar.
The message is still clear:
The books, magazines, computers, games, CD’s, video’s
and other resources provided by Libraries will enrich the
lives of all communities in Emfuleni and also help them to
learn and grow throughout their lives.
Reading is still the most basic skill in an information society.
But it’s no longer enough. Children who aren’t
logged on and computer literate will be lost in the 21st century
and so will the nation.
The biggest challenge facing Library workers all over the
country is to educate citizens and to persuade them that an
investment in libraries is an investment in the future of
our youth and our country. Our Minister, Minister Z. Pallo
Jordan has taken the lead by the allocation of the Conditional
Grants by DAC.
Together we must all promote the theme “from Local
to Global @ your Library”. Remember Library Week is
traditionally fine-free. Use this opportunity to bring back
all those overdue books, without paying a cent from 8 March
– 31 March 2008.
All Emfuleni Libraries will have Library Week programmes
during this period. For more information contact the Librarian
at your nearest Community Library or Marina van Wyk at 016
950-5461.
