16 July 2010 - The Executive Mayor of Emfuleni, in Boipatong today. The project is a partnership between Arcelor Mittal and Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM). A total of 3367 households will benefit from the over R5million project.
Most of the houses targeted are over forty years old which were leaking during rainy seasons. Another significant aspect of the project includes employment and training of 80 workers from the community of Boipatong and Bophelong. Ms Maggie Mopedi, Manager: Corporate Responsibility at Arcelor Mittal, Gauteng province, indicated that skills gained during the project will assist workers in terms of further employment opportunities in similar projects in the future. She further indicated that about 900 houses have been completed to date.
It is estimated that by the end of the year (2010), about 1500 houses would have been completed. The Executive Mayor of Emfuleni, Councillor Mshudulu could not hide his excitement about the significance of the project and contribution of Arcelor Mittal. He highlighted the importance of the partnership between the municipality and its corporate citizens such as Arcelor Mittal.
“The delivery of roof sheets coincide with the celebration of Mandela Day and we are paying tribute to this icon of the struggle. Tata Mandela taught us to love those who oppressed us, to love one another and has helped to reconcile different nationalities. What we are doing today in his honour of his legacy and we take this time to wish him a happy 92th Birthday” He said.
He thanked the Arcelor Mittal and workers working on the project. He then paid a visit to the 71 Tshabalala who received her roof-sheets today.
