14 April 2011 - The South African Constitution states that municipalities have the responsibility to make sure that all citizens are provided with services to satisfy their basic needs. It is through this Constitutional obligation that the Emfuleni Local Municipality strives to ensure that communities have access to electricity and other basic services. Currently there is about 98% electricity coverage in the entire Emfuleni formal settlements and the Municipality is committed to increase the figure.

As part of this commitment, ELM has recently completed a 25 million rand electrification of Tshepong Township project where more than 900 houses were electrified. The project included among others, the upgrading of Ironside substation, the building of a new substation at Tshepong Township and the installation of over 900 prepaid meters and ready boards.

Tomorrow, the Emfuleni Local Municipality, together with the community of Tshepong, will celebrate the success of the Tshepong Electrification Project at an event which will be held as follows:

Date: 15 April 2011
Venue: Tshepong Clinic (between the contractors camp and the substation)
Time: 10H00 to 12H00

The Executive Mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality Cllr Assistance Mshudulu, will deliver a keynote address. Members of the media are invited to attend and give coverage to the event.
