Sluice gates opened at Vaal Dam and The Barrage

In anticipation of rainfalls expected over the Orange River System in the coming days, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) on Thursday, 11 February 2021 started releasing water from the Vaal Dam in Metsimaholo, in the Free State. Three gates were opened on Thursday, with two more scheduled for opening on Friday, 12 February 2021, at 10h00 and 12h00.

Due to the impending increase of flow into the Vaal River, ten gates have been opened at The Barrage. Communities downstream the Vaal River are hereby warned of possible floods and to remain vigilant. Residents living close to river banks are advised to remain alert.

The Vaal Dam was over 106% full and rapidly filling. The opening of the sluice gates was to release water in order to protect the infrastructure and ensure that the Vaal Dam continued to operate optimally.
